Exclusive video: Model Music from Essay

Sometimes you have to take time out to make your art the best it can possibly be. This no-compromise attitude is something I respect about Peter Moran and Renata Raksha, aka L.A.’s Essay. Both of these individuals are as cutting-edge—visually and musically—as they are meticulous.

It was an honor to be invited into their home studio to film them for this, my newest documentary video.

Essay plays Pehrspace this Monday Night, but you don’t have to wait until then.

Model Music is a big deal for me.

One of my goals with this video is to show the frustration/tedium inherent in tracking new music. One of my eternal favorite films, Live at Pompeii, was shot in Abbey Road studios while Pink Floyd recorded Dark Side of the Moon. The movie somehow manages to represent the repetitive recording process in a way that is provocative and involving. I’m not sure I reached the same aesthetic heights here, but I tried.

Essay—Peter and Renata—are simply one of the best groups happening right now in Los Angeles. I have just spent a week with their new music and I am hooked. This is my soundtrack for summer 2010.

I hope you enjoy Essay as much as I do.
