Dildox surfs the synth wave

Who’s in Dildox and what do they play?
Sophie Alieninova on vocals, live looping, and synths. Davey Shook on bass guitar, synths, and drum machines.

When did you first get together?
Our first time playing music together was early 2021 after meeting while surfing. After our first jam we threw a generator show and did our first show as a duo. It’s been non-stop music-making since then.

What’s the origin of the name?
After many attempts to find a name (including some awful name generator options) I asked a friend who knows me personally to name the project. Right away I felt it was a great fit—it encapsulated our on-stage energy while also poking fun at the general seriousness of band names and the pressure to find the coolest one that isn’t already taken. We are inherently silly guys so it seemed like a great fit.

How would you describe your sound to people who haven’t heard you before?
Dark but dance-focused Synthpunk, with heavily effected vocals sometimes in Russian. We bring together our love of Darkwave, minimal synth music, Post-Punk, and EBM to create something energetic and unique.

What are your biggest musical and artistic inspirations?
Artists: Absolute Body Control, The Mall, Sextile, Paradox Obscur, Aurat, Techniques Berlin, Sneaks.

Inspo: general ’80s synth vibes, Soviet aesthetics, Industrial music, metal working, the body as mechanism, pain for pleasure.

Who are the best underground music makers in L.A. right now?
Spike Hellis, Critical Limit, Immortal Nightbody, Shamon Cassette, Dove Armitage, Prissy Whip, Diode, Bonavega.

Is Dildox working on anything new?
We just released our second single “If I Die” on Thursday, April 13th. There is a forthcoming remix to watch out for as well as our 4-song EP. We’ll also have a physical cassette release on Love Shine Records (@loveshinerecords) as a split with ACIDTRAIN due out end of May 2023.

Where can we experience more of what you do?
Connect with Dildox here.

What can folks expect from your show at Oracle Tavern this Friday?
Energy. We aim to bring the intensity up a level every time we play.

Do you have any other shows coming up?
April 24, 2023 at The Redwood Bar (DTLA) and a show in Ventura County on April 27.

What’s your favorite place to hang out in Los Angeles and why?
The east side for shows and the beach for the waves.
