40 BANDS/80 MINUTES!—chosen TOP MUSIC MOVIE/DVD by the L.A. Times’ chief pop critic Ann Powers—has been igniting the passions and imaginations of music fans across Southern California since it’s release on DVD this past November 19th (see below for more quotes from reviewers).

An instant cult-classic rockumentary in the tradition of THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION and URGH! A MUSIC WAR, 40 BANDS/80 MINUTES! documents Los Angeles’ most amazing, experimental and eccentric contemporary underground bands as they join together on one night in Hollywood with a daring goal: to present their uncompromising musical visions to the world… in two minute blasts!

Using shared equipment, each band had only one chance to get it right. No second takes were allowed by the filmmakers. See the trailer at: http://www.40bands80minutes.com

Now, this amazing movie is hitting the road and debuting in your town. Watch it on the big screen!

40 BANDS/80 MINUTES! includes performances from ABE VIGODA, ANAVAN, BIZZART, CAPTAIN AHAB, FIREWORKS, HARASSOR, HEALTH, I HEART LUNG, TOXIC LOINCLOTH, as well as solo and duo performances by members of acclaimed bands MIKA MIKO, FRIENDS FOREVER, NIGHT WOUNDS and CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, plus the legendary WIVES in their LAST SHOW EVER—all captured live with multiple cameras and audiophile-quality sound.

The DVD of the film is distributed internationally by Portland, Oregon-based Nail Distribution.

“40 BANDS/80 MINUTES! is the first movie to exclusively feature up-and-coming DIY bands filmed in their natural environment—an all-ages venue—that is accessible to all music fans,” says director Sean Carnage. “The bands in the film represent many current styles—hip hop, punk, experimental rock, noise, metal, jazz, performance art and electronic music.

“This is the music being made NOW, by kids across the world,” Carnage continues. “That these vastly different bands were collected in a single, 80-minute movie is of historical importance, not to mention being a non-stop rollercoaster ride for the viewer.”

“It’s only fitting that the 40 BANDS! tour should be traveling to key all-ages art spaces such as Galapagos in Brooklyn, Parish Hall in Cleveland, A/V Space in Rochester, The Modern Exchange in Detroit, and Cinemat in Bloomington and the Low Key Arts Building in Hot Springs,” remarks Sounds Are Active Films boss Chris Schlarb. “These venues are the lifeblood of the underground scene.

“At each premiere, there will be DVDs available for sale to fans at a discount price and, in some cities, the screenings will be followed by a special concert of local DIY music that is in the spirit of the movie,” Schlarb says.

“40 BANDS/80 MINUTES! represents the aspirations of all underground musicians—not just the L.A. bands in the film,” concurs Carnage. “With this screening tour, we hope to connect everyone making important new music.

“We will be touring the film to more cities before the year’s end, so this is only the beginning. If you would like to host a screening in your town, please contact us. We are in this together. The 40 BANDS/80 MINUTES! tour is our way of lending support and encouragement to all cutting-edge performers.”
