3RD ANNIVERSARY SHOW THIS WEEK WITH ALL-STAR LINE-UP! PLUS, NEW PIX: KILLSONIC MARCHING GANG, SKYLINE ELECTRIC, VOODOO ORGANIST, EVERYBODY, & MUCH MUCH MORE!!

WOW—this past Monday was CRAZY CRAZY BUSY and SUPER-PACKED! I was fretting because Health/Mabson/Foot Village/etc. were jamming at the Smell on the same night, and their show was a sell-out, too.

But goddamn, we also had a sell-out crowd—Pehr was so packed I could not shut the doors at two different points. That’s a lot of people!

This past Monday was a great night for L.A. music 🙂

Killsonic Marching Gang was on and off the billl so many times I can’t count. But they did, in fact, show up and TOTALLY ROCK everyone in attendance. Many people told me afterwards that this was “the BEST Monday show” they had ever seen. Well, having an 18-piece psychotronic marching band in the place the size of a two bedroom apartment is bound to be thrilling; fortunately, KMG’s music also stood up aesthetically. They recalled a SoCal version of Motherhead Bug or early Cop Shoot Cop being molested by John Philip Sousa. Very, very exciting indeed!

Everybody are pro musicians who aren’t afraid to get dirty and sweat a little. Their three piece, synth-heavy line-up was totally back-to-Zeuhl, i.e. they had a Magma-ish flair that was as alien as it was beguiling. The drummer totally smoked, too. This guys was unstoppable. Just mind-blowing.

Skyline Electric also blew some brains out—in a good way. The ensemble features former Devo drummer Alan Myers plus (on this occasion) our old friend and Il Corral cohort Adam Reese on bass, in addition to what seemed like every other cutting-edge improviser in the city. Some free jazz is just too spacious and precious to be interesting to me. Skyline Electric avoids that trap by just going for it at every moment. This was wild, cacophonous, and soulful stuff. Cheers to you, guys.

The show kicked off in grand style with my friend and musical idol Scott Wexton, aka the Voodoo Organist. He and his drummer blew through some semi-trad organ combo stuff with a Satanic flair and mischevious musical spirit that got everyone clapping, dancing and at least two-six packs closer to serious wastedness. Ahhh… that’s good music!

The night would have been nothing at all without our DJs: Nanny Cantaloupe (who booked the bands and spun the jams) and HM Selecta (who played some incredible records… where does he find them?). Hats off to these two musical mensches.

This week is the 3 year anniversary of Monday shows. I’m really proud that this crazy idea—regularly scheduled, all-ages, D.I.Y. renegade cutting-edge music parties—executed by me—a pre-Alzheimers homosexual wastoid music fanatic from the polluted shores of Lake Eerie—could be so loved by YOU—big city folk with sophisticated tastes and zillions of party options. But somehow, it has all worked out… and it keeps working. Brilliantly, if I quite immodestly say so.
