Watch my unboxing of legendary Hawkwind designer Barney Bubbles’ limited edition A Box of Bubbles
If you know me—if you really know Sean Carnage—you probably already know that Hawkwind is my favorite all-time band.
Heck, I’ve been in not just one but two Hawkwind cover bands (simultaneously for awhile): Cockwind, the gay Hawkwind band, and Cocklords, a not-as-gay-but-still-pretty-queer Hawkwind tribute.
A crucial but under-celebrated major contributor to the Hawkwind (and Stiff Records and Elvis Costello) mythos is British designer extraordinaire, Barney Bubbles.
Born Colin Fulcher, Barney Bubbles was part of the bridge crew when the Space Rock starship was taking it’s first flights.
Bubbles’ designs are truly groundbreaking, bridging as they do the psychedelic art movement of the 1970s and the Post-modern / Memphis styles of the 1980s. It’s minimalism and clever design for acid heads.
Barney Bubbles is my favorite designer ever!
Now, Bubble gets a limited edition box set treatment par excellence from Volume in the UK.
Included is Paul Gorman’s reportedly-wonderful monograph on Bubbles. I haven’t read it yet. I’m beyond excited to crack it open.
I’m sharing the initial unboxing with you here (exclusive photos below the video)
Perhaps—someday soon?—I’d like to interview the superhumans behind this endeavor.
In the meantime, enjoy the sneak peek!
