THIS MONDAY: ST. PATRICK’S DAY AT PEHRSPACE!!! PLUS: NEW PHOTOS OF THE AMAZEMENTS, NASA SPACE UNIVERSE, SUBVACUUM OF NOTHING & TWIN CRYSTALS!
Did you know that “Carnage” is an Irish name? Well it is!
So come celebrate St. Paddy’s Day in style with a bunch of truly Gaellic (gay-lick?) folks at Pehrspace this Monday. Who knows? Maybe some leprechauns will bring us green beer!
The music will certainly be incredible… or should I say AMAZE-ING. That’s because it’s week three of The Amazements’ super-spectacular four-week curation of Sean Carnage Monday Nights.
THIS COULD BE THE BEST INSTALLMENT YET!!!
Each week, the Amaze-men play a new set of their ever-evolving music. Last Monday, they debuted a TON of fresh material and it was fucking ripping!! Yeah, I am sometimes prone to hyperbole but THEY ARE THE REAL FUCKING DEAL! Elon, Liam and Brendan have really crafted something novel with just bass, drums and guitar. The Amazements’ music is undeniably contemporary yet is rooted in the proudly contrarian musical tradition of our great city Los Angeles. Witness their full-on attack and you will hear shreds of X, the Germs, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (circa MIRROR MAN), the Minutemen and… Eazy-E (!?) fly past your ears. Yes, these young guys have simultaneously absorbed 40+ years of musical history AND reconfigured it to the needs of the modern music lover. No retro here—the Amazements seethe with the spirit of NOW.
The Amazements have also chosen fantastic bands to play with. Last week, NASA Space Universe was absurdly great… and messy. In fact, I was still cleaning up their rock explosion today. Ha! Subvacuum of Nothing drove to Pehr all the way from Texas to blast their two-piece ultra-tech metallic hardcore. I loved it! Vancouver, BC’s Twin Crystals were a bit of a surprise. They sounded kinda no-wave on Myspace, but live they were way more naturalistic and musically rich than than their mp3s suggested. Twin Crystals grooved along impressively, with startling detours at all the right times. I hope both these touring bands come back. With half the local musical underground at SXSW, there were quite a few folks who I know would have been super-impressed had they been there. There’s always next time, right?
Kyle Mabson is the man. He played his jams, he did sound, he looked for “that one girl” and musical equipment online… I couldn’t do these shows without Kyle. Or the Pehr folks. Or our intelligent and down-to-earth audience. Thanks x1 million for your support!!
So don’t miss the show this week… There will be lots of surprises, and where the else else would you want to kick out the jams on St. Patrick’s Day?
