THIS MONDAY: AMAZING NEW CUTTING-EDGE MUSIC & A SUPER SECRET GUEST, TOO!! PLUS: NEW PHOTOS!!!
Wow—this past Friday night totally rocked… with no “rock” music necessary! It was an outsider-acoustic music party and a TREMENDOUS success. We were up against some awesome shows at the Smell, Echo Curio, Tribal Cafe, etc. But despite the competition, a huge crowd showed up. And almost all were newbies. It’s great to see that nearly three years after I began hosting concerts, word about how fun and musically enthralling the shows are is still spreading!
Whitman deserves the credit for this one. He was back in L.A. for a few days on his big Western tour with Kelly from Splinter Cake. The bill was comprised of friends and compatriots of Whitman’s Folktale Records. Splintercake from Phoenix was an incredible surprise. Kelly’s songs and cheers were terrifically catchy and delivered in a strong, mellifluous vocal style. Very impressive!
Foot Ox and French Quarter were also phenomenal! Both spun plaintive, emotional tales of love gone wrong. The crowd was digging it, and so was I.
But the real stars were locals John Thill and Whitman. If you haven’t experienced the songs of John Thill… Damn! What are you waiting for!? The man writes some of the best tunes I’ve ever heard, and his unselfconscious performance style is gonna put a smile on the face of music fans who normally don’t love acoustic music. He’s among the most talented artists playing around these parts, so check out his stuff immediately and buy his CDs.
Whitman is perhaps less immediately accessible to the folk music dabbler—his haunting songs are like specters from another dimension. You have to be there to absorb their magic, but, dang, it is sooo worth it. Whitman’s a born showman and has a wonderful voice. He had an ingenious singing skull that accompanied him on several numbers, and even brought out stacks of old vinyl for the audience to smash during his last song. Cathartic, and just about perfect, I’d say… Whatta great night of new music!!!
Do NOT miss this coming Monday—DeathbombArc Records honcho Brian Miller curates.
There’s a reason Deathbomb has developed such an international reputation: Brian’s got his finger on the underground sound, circa NOW.
Also, on the bill is a SUPER-SECRET GUEST performer… I can’t say who he is, but he’s becoming well-known as one half of L.A.’s most written and talked about new music duos. He’s gotten tons of press with his band, and the hype is well-deserved. This Monday, he will be unveiling new guitar music that will stun you. In a year, when everyone is just getting turned on to it, you will be able to say “I heard it first!” And THAT’S WHAT MONDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT!!!
