NEW PHOTOS: DAMO SUZUKI, ANAVAN, THE MAE SHI, & SWORDS OF FATIMA TOTALLY ROCK SAFARI SAM’S!!!
Damo Suzuki has always been a huge hero of mine. He was the singer for Can on many (though not all) of their classic albums. I saw him perform in Cleveland, Ohio right before I moved to L.A. and talking to made me excited about traveling, new adventures, etc. This guy pretty much lives on the road. He also improvises all his performances which, after 35 years of jamming, is pretty amazing that he still has new and exciting things to say with his music.
Anyhow, his all star band at Safari Sam’s included avant-guitarist Nels Cline plus drummer Chris Guttmacher—two of my favorite players. Damo wailed and wailed… Eventually I had to leave to go home and sleep! But that night, I dreamt of weird Damo Suzuki worlds without language, only singing.
The opening bands were a better match for Damo then the sorta lame hippy bands I saw him with in Ohio. The Mae Shi had a gazillion members this night (well, Bill Gray and Marcus from Silver Daggers joined them… so that’s two extra players!) and the band did their standard set they’ve been playing lately. It sounded great, and there were a lot of new faces in the audience so that was cool.
Anavan also had a new member—Tyler from Totally Radd on drums. This didn’t alter the distinctive Anavan sound much. It just meant that Aaron was more free to sing and jump around than when he is stuck behind the kit all night.
Buko Pan Guerra’s new band Swords of Fatima was awesome! Buko is always popping out these great bands… I want to hear them again!
Enjoy the photos 🙂
