MIND-BLOWING, CUTTING-EDGE DANCE PARTY THIS MONDAY! PLUS, NEW PIX: ZECHS MARQUISE, NECKHOLD, WHITMAN, STELLALUNA, & DESTROY TOKYO!!!
I got a lot of praise for this past Monday’s show—perhaps because it was a throw back to the early early days of Sean Carnage Mondays, with equal time for rock, folk, and noise… all on the same bill. I mean, I always always try to mix it up, but this past Monday was particularly diverse. And, from what I felt and what you all told me, it hung together—beautifully!!!
Neckhold from Australia was ear-splitting, ennervating noise made by two skateboarding punks from down under. Hell, they even used their skateboards to make sounds—never seen or heard that before. Awesome! Whitman turned in one of his best sets of drunken gothik folk transcendance, which ended with a can of “Joose” taped to his shirt. Ragin’. Stellaluna aka Fran from Phoenix is so very talented—she can sing!—and her set was not the “mood kill” she predicted it would be. Quite the opposite: everyone gathered around and pressed in tight to hear her sing her brilliant songs (and a great cover, too). Destroy Tokyo are calling themselves “Religious Girls” now. I have always liked them (I like post-Krautrock noisy pop), but, after being on tour for nearly a month, they have tightened up so much that other people finally seem to be catching on, too. I guess this is one of those bands that needed to sharpen their attack to get people to pay attention. Well, folks are listening now! Religious Girls’ mechanik trancey synth and drum reveries reached almost to the Health level of excellence. Finally, Zechs Marquise—who were lovely guys—tied up all the loose ends with a set of trippy guitar jams that perfectly appealed to the Hawkwind fan in me. Bravo!
There was just one sad thing about this show: NO KYLE!!!! Waaah. Bring my Mabson back (Kyle returns to Pehr on August 4th).
