Gorgeous, spooky: Chelsea Wolfe & guests storm Pehr
Many thanks to everyone who came to Pehrspace last night. That was a psychically/emotionally invigorating show.
Chelsea Wolfe, Voice on Tape, Motorcycle Maus, and Felt Drawings painted an eerie aural picture that was perfectly in step with L.A.’s tempestuous weather of the past several days.
Sometimes you need that turbulence to really feel, you know?
Felt Drawings is our old friend Dommm. His new project is an evolution of previous experiments with singing and (sometimes harsh) beats and electronics. Dommm has written some great new songs and music…very impressive stuff.
Motorcycle Maus were two Philly guys with guitars, keys. drum machine, and vocals. Very straightforward. Very lovely. There’s no hiding things with a line-up as paired down as this. Fortunately, Motortcycle Maus had some absolutely stellar songs. Magical.
Chelsea Wolfe and her band were even more solid and more transcendental than I imagined they would be. So many have mined this aesthetic (spooky, soulful woman singing dark songs)…and Chelsea Wolfe has made most of them irrelevant. She has superior songs and flawless execution. This was real deal!
Lou from Voice on Tape celebrated his birthday and that was a lot of fun (thanks for the drink—and happy b-day!).
Voice on Tape is in many ways the male version of Chelsea Wolfe. Heartbreaking vocals, powerful songwriting, shadowy instrumentation…World class music. We’re lucky to have them.
And don’t miss this Monday, April 26th. It’s a bill of all new bands chosen by Big Black-esque noisemakers Knight Rider.
