“Punch yourself in the crotch as hard as you can!” says the trailer.

Well, no thanks. That doesn’t really sound like a good idea.

But taking in the frenetic and intense music movie “40 Bands 80 Minutes!” does.

The DVD – playing Friday at the Crystal Theatre at 7 p.m. and again at 9 – is just what you’d think. It’s 40 Los Angeles bands thrashing on stage for two minutes apiece with shared instruments and equipment.

In case you didn’t hear that right: THRASHING! Over and over and over and… you get the picture.

The movie is produced by Sean Carnage, and features some of the L.A. scene’s most experimental and eccentric underground bands playing one after the other all in one night with little time in between. There’s no second takes and every blast-away set is recorded on multiple cameras with high-quality sound.

The folks at Wantage Total Fest are bringing the show to Missoula.

Yes, there’s screaming, lots of it.

Yes, there’s punk antics, like masks, no shirts and misfired chords.

Yes, there’s a quickening of the pulse, a tightening of the chest and the urge to bounce around.

And yet, strangely, it’s good. Really good, in that bang your head silly for two minutes sort of way.
