Hello, Bitches

Tonight and Monday, this town will be overrun with Bitches.

How is that different from any other night in Los Angeles?

These Bitches—22-year-old twins Blake and Staz—are from London, and they know how to wring great drunken punk/grunge songs out of the simplest instrumentation: “drums, bass and screaming.”

“I kept reading that The Hold Steady were the ultimate bar band or something, but I listened to it and it was bad, fat man Springsteen,” says bassist bro Blake. “We write songs that I’d like to watch in a bar.”

So what are you waiting for?

I really love the debut Bitches single, Winner. Bursting with equal parts joy and snottiness, Bitches are just brilliant at taking simple ideas and monomaniacally hammering them into your skull deep past where your ear canals run out.

This weekend they will be in Los Angeles (at The Smell on Saturday night, at Pehr on Monday, and McWorld on Tuesday June 8th—see details below).

Here’s an exclusive interview with Blake (Staz, his twin sister, plays drums)…

What brings you Stateside?
The promise of 10/10 burritos. Warmth. Rock music shows.

What kind of a show do you have planned for Pehrspace this Monday night?
Largely musical, some improv comedy and winking. Lots of cheeky winks and handshakes.

What are your favorite new groups that you have been playing with?
Divorce from Glasgow. They’re the best.

What new music have you been working on?
We released our single back in February. We’re writing a bunch of stuff atm for a mini album.

Who are your favorite Los Angeles bands?
Foot Village and Health and Motley Crüe.

Who are your favorite UK bands?
Friendship, Teeth!!!, Divorce, Deep sht—they’re all great.

Is there any connections (or major differences) between music here and where you live?
Bands in London rip off Abe Vigoda badly a lot.

Care to share your thoughts on Gary Coleman?
It’s always much harder to take when a child passes.

M.I.A. got into a storm of trouble this past week. How would you have handled the situation?
I Googled this and it said she was unhappy about an interview piece…I could never be portrayed in an interview badly because I always wear a top hat and speak in French. That’s how I handle it.

If you could teach the world to sing, what song would you give them?
Bump ‘n’ grind.

Watch this really phenomenal video from Bitches…it’s only a couple of minutes long and worth every second…totally amazing!
